According to the UK news long-suffering Britons lose 90 minutes of sleep every night as a result of their bed partner’s snoring, research found yesterday. They found that 67% of the 2000 Britons surveyed had a partner that snored. Snoring was coming between the partners and was found to drive them apart causing them to even split up. I hear about couples sleeping in other rooms because of the excessive noise produced from the snoring partner.
This story reported 41% of those surveyed sleep in another room. A full one quarter even stated they would even end a relationship or cut off dating based on snoring which chronically would disturbed their sleep. They report half of the adult population of Briton has snored at some point and one quarter are habitual snorers. Snoring happens when the jaw tends to fall backward and the constriction of the airway at the back of the mouth flaps creating the snoring noise. This noise can reach over 70 decibles which is similar to a pneumatic drill. It is this noise that reduce 90 minutes of sleep for the partner causing their own chronic disturbed sleep causing couples to be separated during sleep. Increase in weight, neck size over 17 inches in males and 16 in females, long soft palate, increase size of tonsils and adenoids, over 40 years of age, and retruded jaw position can all contribute to possibility of snoring. For these individuals it would be beneficial if they were diagnosed and treated for their snoring but sleep apnea needs to be out with a consultation with a sleep specialist.
